Background of the study
Digital visual content has transformed language use on social media, particularly through the interplay of text and imagery in Instagram and TikTok captions. In Nigeria, users creatively modify morphological structures by abbreviating words, blending languages, and inventing new expressions that complement visual storytelling (Afolabi, 2023). Instagram captions typically pair stylized text with high-quality visuals, while TikTok captions are often more spontaneous and integrated with video content. These platforms encourage distinct morphological innovations that reflect cultural trends, digital aesthetics, and communication efficiency. The study explores how the visual nature of these platforms influences word formation and morphological adaptation, revealing differences and similarities in language practices between Instagram and TikTok. Such innovations are indicative of broader digital language evolution, highlighting the role of technology in reshaping traditional morphological norms (Ibrahim, 2024). The research investigates the processes behind these changes and examines their implications for digital communication in Nigeria.
Statement of the problem
Although digital visual content plays a critical role in shaping language, research on its impact on morphological structures in Nigeria is limited. Most existing studies do not compare the morphological effects across different platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok. This lack of comparative research hampers our understanding of how platform-specific features influence word formation and morphological creativity. The study aims to fill this gap by examining the morphological innovations in captions from both platforms, thus providing a comprehensive analysis of digital morphological change (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative perspective on how digital visual content drives morphological innovation in Nigerian social media. The insights will benefit linguists and media practitioners by illustrating the interplay between visual aesthetics and language change (Afolabi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining Instagram and TikTok captions in Nigerian digital discourse. It does not extend to other platforms or offline communication.
